Environmental Toxins and Food Borne Illnesses

We are exposed to numerous environmental toxins and pollutants everyday. They pose an increased problem to our health as many of these toxins and pollutants are in our air, water, and soil. Four of the most widely known environmental toxins are lead, trihalomethanes, ionizing radiation, and tobacco smoke. Environmental toxins are found in our tap water, in the fertilizers used for crops, preservatives and hormones that are added to our food or in the packaging of our food, household cleaning products, personal care products, household items that are comprised of wood products, plastics, and/or solvents, our clothing, and pesticides and insecticides.
Many serious risks have been linked to these environmental toxins such as: certain cancers, depression, asthma, arthritis, immune deficiency and auto-immune diseases, eczema, hormonal imbalances, neurological disorders, chronic fatigue, chemical imbalances in the brain, etc. When environmental toxins cause an array of troubling symptoms they can also be attributed to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). MCS is suspected when a person exhibits problems to even a low amount of toxins, they experience ongoing problems, different triggers affect them, and they improve when the trigger is removed.
It is possible to reduce the toxic intake and build up by incorporating healthy changes and life-style choices. Some of the ways to avoid environmental toxins are to use nontoxic cleaning products, ventilate your space well, always use protective gear when working with toxins such as old paint, eliminate all sources of smoke, do not use bug sprays or bug bombs, thoroughly research all personal products, read the entire insert of all medications, etc. There are numerous herbal substances that can help your body to naturally get rid of toxic build up, such as: dandelion, fennel, and other herbs that are used effectively to cleanse and detoxify the body. There are also natural remedies and foods that have a detoxifying and cleansing effect on the body, too.
Food borne illnesses refer to illnesses that are the result of consuming foods that are contaminated with viruses, parasites, and pathogenic bacteria. There are also those that are due to natural or chemical toxins found on certain foods. Some of the major causes of these illnesses are contamination, improper storage and handling, and improper preparation of foods. It is usually not diseases that occur naturally, but rather unnatural practices that trigger the attack. There are preventive measures that are also simple that are easy to incorporate in order to lessen one’s chances of contracting a food borne illness. E.coli (Haemorraghic colitis) is caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. This bacterium produces toxic substances that can damage the intestinal lining causing pain and diarrhea. Some of those infected will recover quickly; others will experience more serious complications. My daughter developed Hemolytic Uraemic Syndrome. This condition leads to damage to the blood and kidneys and is especially harmful to the elderly and the very young. In order to prevent this, it is advisable to thoroughly wash all items used in preparations, to cook all types of meat to destroy all the organisms present and to refrigerate left over meat right away. In addition, thoroughly cleaning all produce before eating is advisable as well. My daughter contracted hers through spinach, which was later recalled. Salmonellosis is triggered by a bacterium called salmonella. This has the tendency to multiply in the small intestines as well as invading the gut lining. This bacterium is common in feces of animals and humans, in raw eggs, meat, poultry, and other egg and meat products. To prevent this disease it is advisable to thoroughly cook all foods and make sure they are properly handled.
I believe it is extremely important to review with my clients as a precautionary measure. Although they might have heard some of this before, I believe that by discussing this with them, they will recognize that living their healthiest and best life is not dealing with their health on a symptomatic level, but by addressing their health as a whole. It is also important to me that my clients understand the energetic connection to toxins and their bodies. Through discussing these issues with my clients, I am helping to facilitate the integration of the health of their mind, body, and spirit. Integrating wellness through wholeness, this is what I am called to do and what brings me joy!

Three Concerns of Consuming Fast Foods

Fast Food Research Summary

The consumer’s infatuation with fast foods is unquestionably detrimental to one’s health. The portions are oversized, they contain a calorie count that is equally as large, and they contribute to many health risks. These foods are high in fat, sodium, additives, and sugar. Three of the concerns, I have, that are associated with consumption of fast food are increased inflammation, increased stress on the body, and increased toxicity through ingestion of harmful chemicals.

Inflammation is simply the body’s immune system in action. Inflammation as a natural response to infection or injury is the body’s way of guarding itself from further harm. However, inflammation can be triggered inappropriately leading to damage and destruction of healthy tissues. If this inappropriate inflammation becomes chronic it can stimulate the growth of cancer, asthma, degenerative arthritis, and hardening of the arteries, among other health issues. Chronic, low-grade inflammation might produce milder symptoms such as headaches, hay fever, arthritis, and sore muscles.  Some of the foods that contribute to this inappropriate inflammation are added sugars, gluten, hydrogenated oils, and commercially produced, grain-fed meat. All of these are found in fast foods, often in excessive amounts. Studies show that those who eat fast food two to three times a week face a significantly higher risk of developing inappropriate inflammation.

Stress causes a build up of carbon dioxide and lactates in the body, which can result in a condition known as “acidosis”, which is damaging to health. Fast foods, along with other processed foods, contain synthetic additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers, and flavor enhancers. They are also known as pseudostressors or sympathomimetics.  Pseudostressors or sympathomimetics are foods and/or drinks that act as powerful stimulants to the body. These include caffeine, white flour, salt, saturated fats, and the multitudes of other additives, all of which are found in fast food. These foods add unnecessary stress to our bodies.

Another concern of the consumption of fast foods comes from the packaging of the foods themselves. The wrappers used in fast food packaging are often coated with a surface protection treatment and coating called polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (PAPs) to ensure that the grease does not leak through.
Perfluoroalkyls are a hazardous class of stable, synthetic chemicals that are known to repel water, oil, and grease. Researchers have found that these polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters, which are subsequently biotransformed into perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs), are showing up in human blood, urine, and feces. According to a University of Toronto study, the exposure to humans through these fast food wrappers should be considered a significant indirect source of PFCA. Regulators had made the false assumptions that these chemicals won’t migrate into the food, won’t be available to their body, and won’t be processed by the body. All of these assumptions have been found to be wrong. Some of the health dangers of these chemicals are disruption of the endocrine system and sex hormones, serious changes in the weight of various organs in the body, infertility, thyroid disease, cancer, immune system problems, increase in uric acid, and an increase in LDL levels.

These three concerns are certainly not the only concerns of the detrimental effects of ingesting fast foods. The consumption of fast foods has shown a direct correlation to the increase of these health concerns and therefore, in my opinion, must be considered to be significant health risks associated with fast foods. I feel that increased inflammation, increased stress, and increased toxicity are three of the reasons why it is important to seriously reconsider eliminating fast foods from one’s diet.

Through the Desert

Driving back from a visit to my daughter in Colorado, I came upon this sight….

I realized that this view right in front of me was speaking profoundly to me...
It was if it was saying to me…
Those difficult times that you go through...
when it seems as if the deserted, barren, and hard times in life are compounded by huge, overwhelming obstacles with no pleasant end in sight…
It is possible to get to the other side, to a refreshing, abundant life, full of possibilities, and restoration.  If we allow ourselves to keep in mind that we won’t be in the harsh desert forever…
If we don’t stop and step out into the desert and allow it to define and consume us.
If we keep moving forward, even though we can’t see what’s ahead and it seems as if there is no hope and no way out...
WE WILL GET TO THE OTHER SIDE
this one scene that passed by so quickly; yet it spoke volumes to me of what I’ve gone through in my own life, and I wanted to share it with you….
